What is this space?
Rachael: I always, always build this kind of space in any community I go into. It’s my staple spot. It always looks different, but the baby room is so important.
What materials did you use?
Rachael: This is a real crib, real baby clothes, real everything. The baby dolls that work best are ones that look and feel real, but ones that don’t cry or wet themselves. That’s a little creepy, honestly.
Why does this space work well in dementia care?
Rachael: I have seen it over and over again in dementia care communities: many of the residents LOVE baby dolls. It gives them something important to do, something important to nurture and care for. We take so many things away from people with dementia, and they don’t feel useful. Now, residents who believe the dolls are real, feel useful.
Amanda: I have also seen a lot of success with parenting/nurturing stations and dolls. They are the stations I send out most to my clients. Residents love them (women AND men!)
